PAST
AND CURRENT PROJECTS
Women's Development and Action Network (WODANET) - Investing in women for a change.
WODANET is set up in order to
promote the realisation of women and girls' reproductive health
rights through access to economic empowerment opportunities,
skills development programmes as well as useful information
on their well being. WODANET is a project of the Centre set
up as a network of organizations and individuals across the
country.
One of the activities of this network is to seek out
girls who do not have the opportunity to be educated or to further
their education beyond certain level due to financial constraints
or girls who are willing to learn a trade but do not have the
wherewithal to do so.
These are girls whose reproductive health
right would be jeopardised if they do not have access to such
developmental opportunities. WODANET is unique in that it is
a network of women and organizations whose main mission is to
empower disadvantaged girls/women.
What the Centre does...
The Centre facilitated the development of a network, nationwide,
the Women's Development Action Network (WODANET) which is a
network of individuals and organisations dedicated to increasing
girl's/women's access to basic education and skills acquisition
opportunities.
The aim is to improve the ability of young women
to earn a living towards ensuring that women and girls are able
to actualize their reproductive health rights. Till date WODANET
has given eighteen (18) educational scholarships and two (2)
vocational training/adult education scholarships. The scholarship
fund has also assisted a young boy whose sister is a recipient
of our scholarship fund.
This boy is afflicted with sickle cell
anaemia and as at the time the Centre took up his case his mates
was already in SS1 while he had not been able to attend any
secondary school due to financial constraints, although he had
completed his primary school education. Although the Centre’s
focus is girls and women, a sponsor was sought for him who is
fully responsible for his education although the funds are remitted
through the Centre.
The Centre had a capacity building training workshop for members
of the Women's Development Action Network (WODANET), Kwara State
Team in June 2005. Participants at the interactive workshop
were provided with information on understanding of how to start
up and manage a non profit organization effectively. The workshop
explored issues of fundraising and sustainability strategies
as well as how to move WODANET forward in Kwara State.
